  3. Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free
publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The
Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and
calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his
book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but
reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights
by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which
the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights
Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose
to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment
    history.

    ‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I
don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him
as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

Joe Aston (pictured) got the kind of book launch every first time
author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online,
in newspapers and on TV and radio

Anthony Albanese (right) is pictured with his fiance Jodie Haydon (left) and then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce
on March 31, 2023 in Sydney, Australia

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the
first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch.

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made.

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know,
I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who
struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Extravagant Qantas perk Anthony Albanese FAILED to declare is revealed…
    after two days of denials

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack,
Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders
if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s
for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays
when you were the Transport Minister? The answer is «yes» and he’s desperately
    trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should
refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase
of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people
are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his
credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get
this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is pictured with the then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce

Anthony Albanese is pictured on August 14, 2023 as Qantas unveiled its Yes23 livery in support of a Yes vote in the Indigenous Voice to
    Parliament referendum

Among the movers and shakers at Joe Aston’s book launch in the ritzy Hemmesphere
club in Sydney was Tabcorp director David Gallop (pictured)

Paul Barry (pictured in blue shirt), the host of the ABC’s Media
Watch show, was also at the launch

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone
who reads the book will learn that this book is not
a hit job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas.

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of
the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here trying to
get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across
Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the
freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

Guests at Joe Aston’s book launch on Tuesday night are pictured pointing for emphasis or to
    someone they recognise

There was no shortage of free alcohol (pictured)
available at the launch of Joe Aston’s book

Joe Aston is pictured in the exclusive Hemmesphere club in Sydney, where his book The Chairman’s Lounge was launched

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time
and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every
year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand
Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve
    ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks
like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the
claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to
be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the
airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where
it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade
where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed. You’re
not going to the airport crossing your fingers going «Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the
only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.

No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these
    upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to
    get up there.

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature
too. Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard
    to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and
they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but
they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of
    the plane on personal travel.

‘A normal person would say «Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Qantas for comment.

The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out, by Joe Aston, is available now in bookshops and from online retailers

WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S LOUNGE?

The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by the company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.

It has been dubbed ‘the most exclusive club in the country’ and comes with a distinct black card.

Members include senior-ranking MPs such as ministers, state premiers and the Prime Minister, leaders of major unions and sporting groups, Qantas ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities, major corporate figures and high-profile media personalities.

The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide airports but are not signposted – you have to know where to look.

Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings, wool carpet and marble flooring, all bathed in natural light.

Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary premium array of beers, spirits and Australian wines. Wine bottles are often given as departing gifts.

Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of books and magazines.

Members may bring in two guests at a time.

Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight is ready to board, and your personal preferences are logged for each flight.

Membership also entitles you to first-class facilities at Qantas partner airlines.

  4. Celine Dion’s showstopping ‘live’ performance
at the start of the Paris 2024 Olympics was pre-recorded, it was claimed
    in France today.

Millions were moved to tears when the 56-year-old Canadian superstar sang Hymne à L’amour (Hymn to Love) in front of the Eiffel Tower.

It was the culmination of a lavish Opening Ceremony mainly held along the banks
of the River Seine – one that President Emmanuel Macron said was the ‘emotional highlight’ of the sporting extravaganza.

But on Friday, the highly respected Liberation newspaper quoted multiple music industry experts who said the July 26th performance was ‘without
    a shadow of a doubt’ pre-recorded.

In turn, representatives for the Paris 2024 organisers
refused to answer questions on the scandal, despite
previously insisting that the performance was indeed a live one.

‘What we heard on TV was a corrected playback,’ composer and performer Etienne Guéreau told Liberation.

In comments that were republished across French media, a sound
engineer who asked to remain anonymous said: ‘It was 100% playback,
you can hear it from the first notes.’

Others said it was ‘without a shadow of a doubt’ pre-recorded, as was a performance by Ms Dion in rehearsals.

A YouTuber musician who uses the name Wings of Pegasus said the rehearsal
and actual performance also sounded exactly the same – something that is technically
impossible, as there will always be variations between any two versions of a live song.

The Olympics performance was meant to be a triumphant comeback for Ms
Dion, who has been battling the incurable stiff-person syndrome.

Hymne à L’amour was chosen because it was originally sung by the late French music icon Edith Piaf.

Thousands of fans took to social media to praise Ms Dion, whose greatest hits include ‘My Heart Will Go On’, the theme from the Titanic movie.

while another gushed: ‘Queen Celine is back and she sounds fantastic’.

It was in 2022 that Ms Dion disclosed that she had been diagnosed with the
neurological disorder stiff-person syndrome which causes muscles
    to stiffen and spasm.

Around 104,000 people paid for tickets to watch the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony live, with the best seats costing more than £2500.

Despite heavy rain, many sat through multiple acts, including a pre-recorded one by Lady Gaga,
which was shown on multiple screens along the river, as well as around the world.

But Ms Dion’s performance was meant to be a live one, and it has just been released
as such on various streaming platforms.

Ms Dion announced on Instagram on Thursday that the ‘live’

  5. ‘Tis the season for decadence and a touch of sparkle – and what better
way to bring festive cheer than a fridge full of fizz for parties and impromptu gatherings?

Champagne is admittedly my bubbly of choice – I love both poised, elegant styles with
brisk acidity and the richer, pastry-like, gastronomic pours.
But with Christmas all about sharing, toasting, and big
    get-togethers, stocking up is essential.

Consumer group Which? has named Tesco Finest Premier Cru Brut Champagne the best
Christmas fizz, outclassing Moët & Chandon’s Brut Impérial.
The supermarket fizz costs just £25 a bottle, but many popular Champagnes are priced over £40.

With that in mind, I’m sharing my secrets for sparkling swaps that keep both the palate and the wallet happy.

    Bollinger Champagne, £58

Swap for? Langlois Crémant Brut Réserve NV, £15.95

    Saving: £42.05 a bottle

For Bolly bling without the sting, head to the Loire Valley, where the Bollinger family crafts this Crémant
using the same traditional method as their
Champagnes. Made primarily from Chenin Blanc, which thrives in the Loire, it undergoes 24 months of aging, delivering a Crémant with depth that
offers a charming twist on Bollinger’s rich Champagne style –
    with change to spare.

    Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne, £280

Swap for? Roederer Estate Quartet NV, £32

    Saving: £248 a bottle

Renowned producer Louis Roederer is the name behind the iconic Cristal Champagne – a prized choice among celebrities, especially when served in a flashy jeroboam, complete with sparklers in the
‘VIP section’ of nightclubs. But if the £270 price tag brings tears to your
eyes, try Cristal’s Californian cousin, Quartet. Crafted in the cool Anderson Valley,
it offers a taste of luxury for almost a tenth of the cost.

    Laurent Perrier Rosé Champagne, £80

Swap for? Morrisons The Best Crémant De Limoux Rosé
    NV, £12.50

    Saving: £67.50 a bottle

If you’re after something pink, grab this super chic Crémant de
Limoux from Morrisons – delivering luxe for less. With a delicate effervescence and notes of strawberries and cream,
it hints at pink Champagne at five times the price.
And here’s a little-known fact: legend has it that the
art of fizz was first discovered in Limoux, in the South
of France – though our friends in Champagne may disagree.

    Ace of Spades Champagne, £315

Swap for? Segura Viudas Brut Vintage Premium Cava,
    £12

    Saving:  £303 a bottle

For showstopping-style on a shoestring, skip Harrods,
forget Jay-Z’s red-carpet-ready ‘Ace of Spades’ and head to Sainsbury’s for Segura Viudas premium cava, complete with a shield that’s delightfully close to a
spade. For the price of one bottle of that Champagne, you could bag 26 bottles of this
classy cava – and, honestly, after a few glasses, who’s noticing the difference?

Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Champagne, £89

Swap for? Fortnum’s Franca Contea Franciacorta Brut
    NV, £26.50

‘Blanc de Blancs’ meaning ‘white of whites’ is the name

delivering elegance and finesse, à la Ruinart.
Prices have crept up as Blanc de Blancs become all the rage, but hop

  6. Amid tepid returns at the box office for Joker: Folie à Deux, a number of fans of the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019
    motion picture.

The film, which sees Joaquin Phoenix return to the
lead role of The Joker/Arthur Fleck, debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough
for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up
for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the
cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present
in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are
making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional
sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling
they presented. It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2.

I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements
    were a lot of fun.’

One user marveled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal hate despite being more interesting and creative than anything marvel has done in years is expected.’

A user said that ‘Joker 2 is genuinely such a

will floor you by the end. I’m astounded reception is this bad because this is SUCH a clever movie’

Some users said that the bad word-of-mouth the film
was suffering from was impacting the opinions
    of moviegoers.

‘The Joker 2 hate is so forced like did we watched the same
movie????????’ one user said, while another said the hate for the film is ‘so unjustified.’

One fan predicted that the motion picture with stand the
    test of time with audiences.

‘I may be one of ten people who genuinely liked the Joker 2.
Remember me when society circles back to it in 10 years and
says its a masterpiece,’ said the user. ‘The world just wasn’t ready for it yet.’

Said one user: ‘I actually thoroughly enjoyed it. If you don’t like musicals or ‘art
house’ style films you probably won’t like it because
it’s not made for you. The dynamic between Harley and Joker was brilliant and showcased the ‘obsession’ that is
    key to that duo.’

The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the industry wondering:
How did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with
the same creative team go wrong? Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October
    2019.

A number of fans took to social media to defend the controversial sequel

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its
cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter
nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival,
where it premiered in competition like the first movie and even got a 12-minute standing
    ovation.

But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the fragile foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63 percent at Venice to
33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews:
Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film
a deadly D CinemaScore. Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better.
It got a meager half star out of five possible.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for
Comscore. ‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.
A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce, though reported figures vary
at exactly how pricey it was to make. Phillips told Variety
that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros.
released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from
    415 IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its
total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next
two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and
    China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s
The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its
second weekend, bringing its domestic total
to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice  took third place in weekend
five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No
Evil rounded out the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White
Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+
    CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some
who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something
as ‘audacious’ as the first film. The sequel added Lady Gaga
into the fold , as a Joker superfan, and delved further into the mind of
Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for
the murders he committed in the first. It´s also a musical,
with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers to old
standards. Gaga even released a companion album called »Harlequin,’
    alongside the film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some
who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.
In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But
fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it
comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic book characters on the big screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
They want the tried and true, the familiar.’

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with
the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical. ‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse,
then about whether it might send the wrong message to
the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was about.
Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including
best picture and best director, and three wins. It also made over $1 billion and
was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this
summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at
U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to
Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released
    Monday.

new sequel as ‘terrible’ and ‘the worst film ever made’.

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga
as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics
before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office.

Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted he knew it was ‘going

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast,
Tim said: ‘It’s the worst film ever made.

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh,
this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people.
This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage!
    Nihilism! All these think pieces.

‘And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,
‘ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing to
    a point where it’s insane.’

He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these
other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and
I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and
I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going

‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable.

    That’s how terrible it is.’

It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’ at the immense flood of negative reactions to
Joker: Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects to help
distract from the furore over the film, insiders claim.

Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under $40 million at the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.

Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker – a role that
won him the best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake
of the standing ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival last month.

‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked that people
don’t love it after the response it received from
critics before it premiered,’ a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.

‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect
for the DC comics fan base.’

They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they
can roll out as they want to move on this from as quickly as possible.’

But despite the lacklustre reception from fans, a second source claimed she is not letting
it deter her from returning to the big screen, with the singer said to be eyeing up a Quentin Tarantino movie.

‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a
    bomb,’ they said.

‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since the first film was such a
success and Joaquin won an Oscar.

‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next and final film.
Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she wants to audition.

The awkward family exchange occurred on Tuesday’s Kyle and
Jackie O Show when the radio queen and co-host Kyle Sandilands were discussing Jackie’s new memoir
    The Whole Truth.

Before getting her father on the line, Jackie explained to listeners
that she was about to get an unsuspecting Tony to read an excerpt
that detailed a night of passion with then boyfriend ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil and a
    19-year-old stripper.

‘So this is going back to my Gold Coast days when I had met Phil who [later became]
my first husband,’ the 49-year-old explained.

‘I had only just met him at this point. I think [we were] two months into seeing each other.’

Jackie then prompted her unprepared father to read the excerpt that detailed
Phil’s living situation with the stripper and another,
    rather unsavory ‘stoner’ flatmate.

‘He lived in a place in Main Beach that felt like a motel with
two weird flatmates. One was a stoner guy who would sit there blazed out of his gourd,’ Tony
    read from Jackie’s book.

The book then turned to Jackie’s first ménage à trois.

‘Then there was the stripper they lived with [named] Christie,
    ‘ Tony read.

‘We went out to a nightclub one night and we came home and we were having sex and
Christie decided she wanted to join us.

Before getting her father on the line Jackie explained to listeners
that she was about to get Tony to read an excerpt that detailed a night of
passion with then boyfriend ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil and a 19-year-old stripper

‘We went out to a nightclub one night and we came home and
we were having sex and Christie decided she wanted to join us,’ Tony awkwardly read

‘The idea of a threesome had obviously never occurred to me before I had never
even considered it because it didn’t sound like me.’

Tony soldiered on with the revealing passage which revealed
that Jackie and Phil’s third was only interested in one
    half of the equation.

‘I had no idea what to do – she was this cute 19-year-old with
a dark bob and an amazing body but she was only into women,’ Tony continued.

‘Phil was really excited but Christie kept slapping him away.
She did her thing and then left.’

When Kyle asked Jackie to clarify what she meant by ‘did her
thing’, a sheepish Jackie replied: ‘Let’s not talk about this
in front of my dad, shall we.’

and an amazing body but she was only into women,’ Tony continued.

She did her thing and then left.’ Jackie id pictured with Phil (r) and Michael Jackson tribute act Jason Jackson

Despite the raciness of the content he had just read from his daughter’s book, Tony admitted he was not shocked by the revelations.

‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.

‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re talking about.
If it was somebody else, it would be a different story altogether.
    I’d be so excited.

‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’

Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate
    and Jackie’s mother Julie.

‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door, she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate
was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony read.

The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her
years-long battle with drugs which saw her secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic in November in 2022.

During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at
the height of her addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills and
24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

  12. Amid tepid returns at the box office for Joker: Folie à Deux, a number of fans of
the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film, which sees Joaquin Phoenix return to the lead role of The Joker/Arthur Fleck, debuted to a paltry
$40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that
    of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans
took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away
from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element
not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as
people are making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel,
and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2.
I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were
    a lot of fun.’

Amid tepid returns at the box office for Joker: Folie à Deux, a number of
fans of the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense
of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture, starring Joaquin Phoenix

One user marveled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal hate despite being more interesting and creative than anything marvel has done in years is
    expected.’

A user said that ‘Joker 2 is genuinely such a clever movie which carries the character study format of the first movie into the
second in a way which, surprisingly, will floor you by the end.
I’m astounded reception is this bad because this is SUCH a clever movie’

Some users said that the bad word-of-mouth
the film was suffering from was impacting the opinions of moviegoers.

‘The Joker 2 hate is so forced like did we watched the same movie????????’ one user said, while another said the hate for
    the film is ‘so unjustified.’

One fan predicted that the motion picture with stand the test of time with audiences.

‘I may be one of ten people who genuinely liked the Joker 2.
Remember me when society circles back to it in 10 years and says its
a masterpiece,’ said the user. ‘The world just wasn’t ready for it yet.’

Said one user: ‘I actually thoroughly enjoyed it. If you don’t like musicals or ‘art house’ style
films you probably won’t like it because it’s not made for you.
The dynamic between Harley and Joker was brilliant and showcased the ‘obsession’ that is key to that duo.’

The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the industry wondering:
How did the highly anticipated sequel to
an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with the same creative team
go wrong? Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged
the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch
    in October 2019.

A number of fans took to social media to defend the
    controversial sequel

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the
movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered in competition like the
first movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.

But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the fragile foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its
Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63 percent at Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews: Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better. It got a meager
half star out of five possible.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian,
the senior media analyst for Comscore. ‘The biggest issue of all is
the reported budget. A $40 or $50 million opening
for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce,
though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.
Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros.
released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.

About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from
25,788 screens, bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks,
Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s
The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally,
it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took third place in weekend five,
Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White
Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners
hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces,
some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to
make something as ‘audacious’ as the first
film. The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as
a Joker superfan, and delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned
at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers to old standards.

Gaga even released a companion album called »Harlequin,’
    alongside the film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was
deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.
In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans
often ignore the advice of critics, especially
when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic book characters on the
    big screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.

‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.

They want the tried and true, the familiar.’

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started
with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical. ‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical
    sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what
the fuss was about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool
    & Wolverine took the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.

Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

  13. A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a
single tree from the driveway of their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked by their local council.

Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia’s first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court,
and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to remove a single peppermint tree growing in the middle of their driveway.

The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent, tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth’s Freshwater
    Bay for $20.1million in August.

They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused the request on the grounds the tree was not dead or deceased.

‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the
tree placement is unusual,’ Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council
    meeting.

‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it
    quite tricky to reverse out.’

The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week
after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to be removed on the condition they paid a $2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway.

They will also need to plant two replacement trees on their property.

    the age of 53

Paul Holmes à Court and his wife Zara won a council battle to
remove a peppermint tree (pictured) from the driveway of their $20million mansion

Ms Holmes a Court previously claimed the tree’s odd placement also
made it difficult to spot cars turning the corner at a nearby intersection with Bay View Terrace.

After the motion to remove the tree was passed at
the meeting, councillor Douglas Jackson said it was a
    ‘good outcome’.

‘I think it meets both the owners’ wants, or expectation, but also matches the council’s needs
at the same time by ensuring that there is tree cover on the verge
    of that property,’ he said.

Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence to damage or remove any mature trees
on private property without council approval.

Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire of Peppermint Grove would ‘take a common sense approach’ to the
    issue.

‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government.
I’ve always been on the record that we need local governments to take a common sense approach to
issues,’ Mr Carey told the West Australian.

‘And I understand people are passionate about trees.

But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic outcomes.’

According to the online listing for the four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion – which
is built on a corner block along the banks of
the Swan River – the sprawling Federation-style property was
    built in around 1904.

The Holmes à Court property was built in around 1904 in Federation ‘Arts and Crafts’ style

The home boast an unparalleled view of the Swan River overlooking Fresh Water Bay

‘Designed in the rare Federation ‘Arts and Crafts’ style,
the home has retained all its elegance and splendour via lofty ceilings, sweeping verandas, charming decorative
arches, casement-style sash windows, and walls of French doors that bathe the home in light, reflecting
river views beyond,’ the listing said.

The property also features ‘Plush Champagne-hued carpets’ and ‘cobble-stoned remote garage to accommodate six cars, abundant
storage, gym area, double vanity rain-shower bathroom and
    climate-controlled wine cellar.’

Mr Holmes a Court is the chief executive of prize-winning wine label Vasse Felix and the brother of Peter Holmes à Court, who once
jointly owned of the South Sydney Rabbitohs with Russell Crowe, and climate philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court.

However, the musical has received mixed reviews from critics
and fans took to social media to claim that Lady Gaga , 38, is running the risk of losing her acting career

‘This could have been a great romantic musical starring Joaquin Phoenix and
Lady Gaga that people really would have liked,
but at no point should this ever have been a sequel to Joker and
used the characters Harley Quinn and Joker, absolutely no reason to even have it be DC Set.’

Another added: ‘The Joker 2 could have done it all and did
way better than the first one but they went with some f*****g musical just
    cause lady gaga was in it. What a way to kill what could have been an amazing Joker series’;

‘The reviews on the Joker are so bad. Omg Gaga your acting career about to be
over.’; ‘Lady Gaga and all this musical s**t were just
    a terrible idea for the joker sequel when the first was a blast.’;

‘It just felt a lil lackluster. I felt like I hung on as much as I could but the ending sent me.
I think being a fan of both Gaga and the character
    joker had me interested but overall upset’;

‘Too much singing! Why is Gaga in the movie
though. Definitely didn’t want to hear her sing’

Meanwhile, The Guardian claimed the much-hyped Gotham sequel proved ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive’.

While Daily Mail branded the sequel as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant yet audaciously different in style from the original.

Brian Vine wrote: ‘For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this
sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is
still a gripping film about mental illness; not quite comparable with all-time
greats such as Psycho (1960) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not
    too far off. ‘

The mixed reviews come after Gaga showed off her eclectic fashion sense on Monday as she channelled her character Harley Quinn
at The Joker: Folie à Deux premiere in Los Angeles.

The entertainer stars in the forthcoming project alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, who joined her on the red carpet.

The movie serves as a follow-up to Phoenix’s 2019 box office hit,

One month before the sequel’s release date, Joaquin praised Gaga for her ‘impressive’ preparation for the feature film.

During a Venice Film Festival press conference in which he discussed shedding pounds for Joker, he added:

‘I remember when I first met you in rehearsals and then you

He continued, ‘It was really impressive.

Gaga agreed, ‘I think we transformed into our

sequin blazer (we’re looking at you, Selena Gomez), or styled with a little black
dress and a pair of killer heels (à la Alexa Chung at the Fashion Awards), tights and stockings are a great way to add style – and perhaps an extra layer of warmth – to
your outfits during the autumn and winter months.

From matte to glossy, opaque to sheer, and
black to skin-toned shades, there’s a lot more to consider than just the denier number
when it comes to picking out a pair of classic tights.
And then, of course, there is also patterned hosiery (think
delicate designs like a back seam, polka dots or lace detailing) to
    elevate your winter style.

    ‘Tis the season of hosiery

In 2024, tights should no longer be an obligation but a fashion choice.
Google searches for ‘tights’ are up by 115% since the temperatures
first dropped, and at high-street favourite M&S two pairs are sold every minute.

So what styles are we buying?

The top spot is claimed by the retailer’s 60 Denier Body
Sensor Tights (a handy three-pack that sells for just £8 and is available in a black,
navy and brown). The 40 Denier Body Sensor Tights (£8 for a three-pack) are
second favourite, followed by the 30 Denier Body Sensor Tights
(£8 for a three-pack). The fourth most popular pair is the 60 Denier Magicwear Opaque Tights (£14 for a two-pack), and the top five is
rounded out by the 100 Denier Magicwear Opaque Tights (£14 for a two-pack).

These are the number one selling tights at Marks &
    Spencer

M&S believes the decision between opaque and sheer tights
should be based on the formality of our outfit. ‘Opaque black
tights will go with basically everything. Often said to
clash with black; blue or brown hues are also an option.’

‘Sheer tights are great for more formal occasions and warmer temperatures,
as they provide a lighter and more breathable option,’ the high street
giant added. ‘You can achieve that elegant, barely-there look with a little extra coverage.’

Similarly, intricate patterns, logos and glitter
are best suited for evening looks, says M&S. ‘For a daytime or office look, stick with
polka dots or diamond patterned tights, or if you’re looking for some added cosiness, try
cable-knit tights for some subtle texture.’

playing Joker which ultimately went to Heath Ledger.

The 50-year-old actor – whose latest flick Joker: Folie À Deux
could be streamed now – got candid about potentially playing the supervillain before he actually portrayed him.

Joaquin recently appeared on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast as he revealed that he spoke to the 54-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker
Nolan about portraying Joker over a decade before.

He said: That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for a number of
    reasons. I wasn’t ready then.

‘That’s one of those things sometimes where you go: «Why am I not doing this project? What is stopping me from doing this? Well it’s not about me, there’s something else. There’s another person that’s going to do something that’s like, I can’t imagine what it would be if we didn’t have Heath Ledger‘s performance in that film.»‘

Joker: Folie À Deux heading to streaming
    after box office flop

In 2020, Joaquin earned the Best Lead Actor Oscar for Todd Phillips directed Joker which was 11 years after Ledger
posthumously earned Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight in 2009.

Joaquin continued: ‘I don’t know whether
Christopher Nolan was coming to me saying, «You are definitely the person.»

‘I can’t remember the context of how we met.
But I know that we met, and my feeling was, «I shouldn’t do this.» But
maybe he also was like, «You’re not the guy.» I couldn’t say.’

Heath died in a New York City apartment on January
22, 2008, after accidentally overdosing following months of physical and mental exhaustion.

The Dark Knight actor died aged 28 after taking a fatal
cocktail of drugs, leaving behind his daughter, who was two years old at
    the time.

Meanwhile Joker: Folie À Deux can now be streamed, just weeks after its theatrical release.

The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, is now available to rent from home starting October 29, in an effort to recoup some of Warner
Bros. investment into the film, as per Variety.

The musical, which bombed at the box office, is ‘poised to lose
at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run’ according to the publication.

Terrifier 3 dethrones Joker: Folie À Deux as box office champ

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring in the cut
taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous «insiders» or «rival executives» are
grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s
opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’

So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning
film was considered a surefire hit for Warner
Bros Pictures, yet ended up being slammed by
critics and failed to ignite at the box office.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as
the film bombed at the box office on opening night.

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as
‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October
    4.

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel,
which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the
2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel
    (Harley Quinn).

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D
rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book movie.

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score
    with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience
score of 31% and a critic score of 32%.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for
being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with
an agent familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to
do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn
and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about
some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city,
it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not
a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the
Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to
say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and
Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio
but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With
all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.

    movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April
2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower
    price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one thing about genre
stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the
fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd
Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA premiere
    September 30

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the
decision to film in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t
listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations
    are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere
the film at the Venice Film Festival, but
Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.

Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson,
Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

who use nicotine or tobacco in a bid to create a healthier workplace, cut back on medical costs, and reduce the ‘loss of productivity’
    from smoke breaks.

The city will enforce the new rule with all employees hired after
from July on but it won’t apply to employees who worked for
    the city’s office beforehand.

The city will employ a nicotine and tobacco pre-employment screening
process. After being hired, the city will test employees if the office is tipped off about their tobacco use.

‘Studies indicate that employees that smoke cost approximately an additional
$6,000 per year in direct medical costs and lost productivity,’ Kenneth Couch, Dayton’s director of human resources, said.

The city of Dayton, Ohio will no longer hire employees who smoke cigarettes or vape,
effective starting July 15, in a bid to create a healthier workplace
and cut down on medical costs

Under the new rule employees will be banned from using nicotine
or tobacco products at work or in their time off. The new plan will also eliminate designated smoking areas around the city property.

However, not everyone is on board.

Leaders of labor unions fear that the new city
policy could be a ‘slippery slope’ that could further scrutinize the
personal habits of employees and their private lives that have little correlation with
    their job performance.
