  2. ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and there are many ways to serve them (see tip).
The veal in these gives a lightness to the result, but you can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork mince.
This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging around.
The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have a meal
    for an emergency.

    SERVES 4

4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion

    1 onion, finely chopped

    2 garlic cloves, chopped

    400g tin chopped tomatoes

200g white bread (day old, if possible)

whole milk (enough to soak the bread)

    500g beef mince

    250g English veal mince

2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve

    4 anchovies, finely chopped

    2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley

salt and freshly ground black pepper

    350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional;
    see tip)

1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of olive oil over a medium heat, then add half the chopped onion and half the garlic,
then sauté for 10 minutes to soften. Add the tomatoes and when the liquid starts
to bubble, reduce to a simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20
minutes, to create a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.

2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft. In another bowl, mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies,
half the parsley and the rest of the onions and garlic.

Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it first.
Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.

3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over
a medium heat. When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes) to ensure they colour all over.
If necessary, cook in batches so they are not all squashed together,
setting each batch aside on a plate while you cook the remainder.

4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a medium heat.
Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes
to cook through. Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.

TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according to the packet instructions
until al dente. Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful
of the cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary, and then transfer it back
to the pan and toss it with a little olive oil and butter.
Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top with the meatballs and sauce.
Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan.

  3. Tim Dillon, who makes a brief appearance in Joker:
Folie à Deux, has described the new sequel as ‘terrible’ and
    ‘the worst film ever made’.

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its October
4 release and flopped at the box office.

Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no
plot’ and admitted he knew it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming.

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the worst
    film ever made.

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by
incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind
of message. Male rage! Nihilism! All these think pieces.

reviews from critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office

‘And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing to a point where
    it’s insane.’

He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there,
me and these other guys were all dressed in these
security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum,
and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go,
‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to
bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’

‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?

Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable.
    That’s how terrible it is.’

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for
the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that
    of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic
depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first
film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be.
I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully
committed to the storytelling they presented. It never deviated
to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the
first film’s fandom and the musical elements
    were a lot of fun.’

    motion picture

One user marvelled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal hate despite being more interesting and
creative than anything marvel has done in years is expected.’

It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’ at the immense flood of negative
reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects to help
distract from the furore over the film, insiders
    claim.

Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under $40 million at the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.

Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her turn as Harleen Lee
Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49,
as the Joker – a role that won him the best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing ovation it
received at the Venice Film Festival last month.

‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and
is shocked that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered,’ a source
    exclusively told DailyMail.com.

‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect for the DC comics fan base.’

They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll
out as they want to move on this from as quickly as possible.’

Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects to help distract
from the furor over the film, insiders claim

But despite the lacklustre reception from fans, a second source claimed she is
not letting it deter her from returning to the big screen, with the singer said
to be eyeing up a Quentin Tarantino movie.

‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a bomb,’ they said.

‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially
since the first film was such a success and Joaquin won an Oscar.

‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next and final
film. Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she wants to
    audition.

‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a script
is presented, it is a bucket list moment for her to be
    involved.’

  7. Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio
    album in February.

Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot 100 at No.
27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead with her next album, which she described as both
    ‘fun’ and ‘darker.’

Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga
said that she’s been focused on the production side of her new songs.

‘I love producing — I always have — and something
that was really important to me making my seventh studio album was blending live instrumentation with programming,
    ‘ she explained.

‘The album is chaotic from a genre perspective
    — it is genre-bending, and I think in that way is a deeply
personal look into my mind as a producer and the way I think about music.’

She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’ sound that’s more
in line with her iconic 2009 album, The Fame Monster.

However, fans need not be worried that Gaga is going too
    somber with her sound.

‘The album is not extremely serious in that it’s very fun and meant to be enjoyed at
a party, in a club, or at home having personal fun time — to be free of your
worries at home or walking through life,’ she
    insisted.

Lady Gaga is focused on releasing her seventh studio album this February
following the disappointing reception to lead single Disease

Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last month to rave reviews from music critics, who lauded it as a return to the star’s roots.

Unfortunately, the acclaim failed to translate to the
charts, with Disease debuting at No. 27 on the Hot 100
    – her worst entry for a lead single in 16 years.

On the bright side, Gaga is currently enjoying one of her biggest hits in years thanks
to her Bruno Mars duet, Die With a Smile.

The ballad has so far reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 and No.
1 on the Pop Airplay Chart.

It comes after Gaga’s leading role in the disastrous Joker: Folie à Deux.

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring
Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Gaga as Lee

plot’ and admitted he knew it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming.

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the worst
    film ever made.

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was
a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by the
wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind of message.

Male rage! Nihilism! All these think pieces.

Tim Dillon, who makes a brief appearance
in Joker: Folie à Deux, has described the new sequel as ‘terrible’ and ‘the worst film ever made’

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady
Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its
October 4 release and flopped at the box office

‘And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing to a point where it’s insane.’

He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and
I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to
bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’

‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is
the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love
with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible it is.’

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social
media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office,
good enough for the weekend’s top spot,
but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for
the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the
first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as
divisive as people are making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t
try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the
storytelling they presented. It never deviated to be
a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as
a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of
    fun.’

Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans
of the sequel took to social media after its release last month to
defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture

One user marvelled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal hate despite being
more interesting and creative than anything marvel has done in years is expected.’

It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’
at the immense flood of negative reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team
now keen to quickly push out other projects to help distract from the furore over the film, insiders claim.

Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under $40 million at the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore
    in comic book movie history.

Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love
for her turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker
    – a role that won him the best actor Oscar in 2019
    – in the wake of the standing ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival last month.

‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked that people don’t love it after
the response it received from critics before it premiered,’ a source exclusively
    told DailyMail.com.

‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much
respect for the DC comics fan base.’

They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they
can roll out as they want to move on this from
    as quickly as possible.’

Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other projects to help distract from
the furor over the film, insiders claim

But despite the lacklustre reception from fans, a second source claimed she is not letting
it deter her from returning to the big screen, with the singer said to be eyeing up
    a Quentin Tarantino movie.

‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much
    a bomb,’ they said.

‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially
since the first film was such a success and Joaquin won an Oscar.

‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next
and final film. Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she wants to audition.

‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting
with him once a script is presented, it is a bucket list moment
    for her to be involved.’

  12. The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s
movers and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.

Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars wining and dining the nation’s
political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively unknown.

It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of Qantas had even started, when he
was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline,
    Jetstar.

And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.

The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that
would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard lose his own seat.

The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s
Lounge then wasn’t about a prime minister’s privileges, although John Howard and
Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as PM.

But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a politically charged remark
made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat was out of the bag.

The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies
it campaigned on if it won government – did not deter his
party from romping in on election day.

In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and
that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

The exclusive Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (above) has been a well-kept secret
for years, but it exploded into the public conscience in 2007 as the result of a political furore

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge
member since 2002 during a row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let
the cat out of the bag about the VIP club

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price had
to explain what the private enclave actually was.

In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club.

‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are
approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.

    ‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’

In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also a member of lounge.

Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to
the remark Price said Garrett had made.

Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers, and well-known writers and sports people are said to be
among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.

Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place,
but which exposed him to criticism over his
own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

Back in 2007, Alan Joyce (left) was boss of the comparatively
lowly budget airline Jetstar, and then Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon (right) had the power over
who made the cut to the Chairman’s Lounge

One observer has described the relationship bet6ween leading politicians such as PM Anthony Albanese and
the former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce (above) as
    ‘alarmingly cosy’

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians and business leaders some
privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.

‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.

The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by
Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into
    the club’s hushed confines.

Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you have to be personally invited by the
airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.

‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff who will be travelling cattle class.

‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club
    have included Pauline Hanson.

‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is
currently enjoying a prolonged exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the former HIH insurance executive jailed for eight years on fraud and bribery offences).

Membership of the elite lounge is confined to about
6000 Australians including politicians from both sides, senior public servants,
    TV stars and actors

The ‘scandal’ currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership
and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime
minister (above the PM with partner Jodie Haydon and ex-Qantas
    CEO Alan Joyce)

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the
lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests
that year included Liberal MPs of the day,
Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.

Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson,
and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.

Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the
airline’s spokesperson  told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by
invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’

Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free
membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with
one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.

Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.

They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge by
former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has
    stirred up the controversy.

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’
interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House
of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s
leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.

Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.

At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate.

    What’s appropriate is transparency.’

Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet,
his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

PM Anthony Albanese and every member of his 22-person Cabinet,
his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers
are members of the exclusive Chairman’s Lounge

Entry to the country’s six opulent VIP clubs are suitably discreet,
but once inside, the designer lounges offer free à la carte fine dining,
table service and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants

On the Coalition side of parliament, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton,
deputy leader David Littleproud and former deputy
Barnaby Joyce are also among the swathes
of politicians who have disclosed they have taken up free membership to the contentious club.

Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still a member and so is Teal MP,
    Zali Steggall.

Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and
some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge
    despite regulating the airline.

Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime Minister
and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott
    Dewar.

Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points,
and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.

Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is
    still veiled in secrecy.

The new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston (above) has stirred up the controversy

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo are members
    despite regulating the airline

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane,
Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.

Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious, with free à la carte fine dining,
table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and
a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.

Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave, the ‘Beyond’ lounge.

Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the wake of the furore.

The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South Australian senator Barbara Pocock and
former Wallabies star turned ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.

Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent
Commission Against Corruption and a director of the Centre for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and
    policymakers to follow suit.

‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s
    Club membership,’ he said.

‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed
to represent the public. Why not sit with them while
    you’re waiting for a plane?’

  16. Red takes center stage as the hottest color of the holiday season.

All red looks have been trending with the fashion set for some time, but after Rihanna attended the Fenty Hair launch party in a monochromatic
look accessorized with multiple ruby baubles, red-on-red became cooler than ever.

The ‘Stay’ hitmaker donned a custom red
leather Khaite jacket and skirt with ruby and diamond jewelry
by Sabyasachi, David Webb and Reza.

Monochromatic outfits, particularly in red, exude confidence and sophistication.

With the vibrant color being synonymous with the holiday season, it’s a natural choice for
    parties and festive gatherings.

By also accessorizing with ruby jewelry (à la Rihanna) you can add a touch of luxury to even the simplest of separates.

Rubies are often referred to as the ‘king of gemstones’ and their vibrant color – caused by the presence of chromium – is often associated with passion, love,
    and power.

The name ‘ruby’ comes from the Latin word ‘ruber’ which
    means red.

Rubies are incredibly sought after for their beauty and durability,
they are ranked 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness
(qualitative scale that measures the relative hardness of minerals and other
materials by their resistance to scratching), second to diamonds.

Beyond their sparkle and strength, they have held cultural significance for centuries.

Throughout history, rubies have been associated with nobility and
wealth, often adorning the crowns of kings and queens.
They are also believed to bring good fortune and protection to their wearer.

According to Melee the Show founders Lauren Wolf and Rebecca Overmann, ruby jewelry is on the rise.

The fine jewelry trade show connects buyers and designers,
with the next shows taking place in New York (February 1-3)
    and Tucson (February 5-7).

‘From bold gemstones to intricate craftsmanship, our designers bring rubies to
life in ways that inspire and captivate,’ said the duo.

Anthony Lent, Fannie Thomas, Heather Guidero, Jake Matluck, Amali, Karin Jacobson, Marian Maurer and Ciara Bowles
are some of the exhibiting designers who work with rubies.

  17. Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing
the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States.

The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe
Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.

‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is
the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.

‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line series
    of points to the argument.

‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s
making both of the main parties re-examine who they are
    and what they stand for.

Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US
politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.

There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

The Oscar-winning actor (pictured ) made the observation in response to podcast host Joe Rogan who complained that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’

Joe Rogan (pictured) is one of the most powerful media figures in the world

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes
and take five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom
Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform but with only a million votes.

The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent
candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.

He has now been appointed Health secretary
    in Trump’s incoming cabinet.

Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by
former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular
vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.

Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the
Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California and coming second
    ahead of Republican William Taft.

Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent
politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition

This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now
have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

Zali Steggall (pictured) became the first ‘teal’ independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.

This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views
on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the
    centre-right Liberal Party on economics.

Zali Steggall became the first teal independent
to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.

In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.

She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with
this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.

Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was
first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.

They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à
Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal
    candidates.

Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022
    were teals, however.

Maverick independent Bob Katter has just celebrated 50 years in parliament
(pictured: being congratulated by prime minister Anthony Albanese)

Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor
frontbencher and former NSW Labor premier Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney seat of Fowler.

And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20
years as a Queensland state MP before serving the past three decades in federal parliament as
the MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of
    Kennedy.

Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include
a bid to teach school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the
Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house –
the highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.

  21. Tim Dillon, who makes a brief appearance in Joker: Folie à Deux, has described
the new sequel as ‘terrible’ and ‘the worst film ever made’.

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as
Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office.

Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted
he knew it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming.

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the worst film ever made.

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker,
there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels.
This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind of message.
Male rage! Nihilism! All these think pieces.

Tim Dillon, who makes a brief appearance in Joker: Folie à
Deux, has described the new sequel as ‘terrible’ and ‘the worst
    film ever made’

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady
Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews
from critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office

‘And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix
and Lady Gaga tap dancing to a point where it’s insane.’

He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these other guys
were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at
the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear
this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst
    thing I’ve ever seen.’

‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love
with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible it is.’

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social
media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd
    Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good
enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less
than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took
up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie
cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the
    franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was
‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be.
I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the
storytelling they presented. It never deviated to be a film
full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it
was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has
‘no plot’ and admitted he knew it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming

Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social
media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture

One user marvelled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal hate
despite being more interesting and creative than anything marvel has done in years is expected.’

It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’ at the immense flood of negative reactions to Joker: Folie
à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push
out other projects to help distract from the furore over the film,
    insiders claim.

Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under $40
million at the domestic box office, and receiving the
lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.

Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley
Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker
    – a role that won him the best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival
    last month.

‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and
is shocked that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered,’ a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.

‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect
for the DC comics fan base.’

They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they
can roll out as they want to move on this from as quickly as possible.’

It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’
at the immense flood of negative reactions to Joker: Folie
à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out other
projects to help distract from the furor over the
    film, insiders claim

But despite the lacklustre reception from fans, a second source claimed
she is not letting it deter her from returning to the big screen, with the singer
said to be eyeing up a Quentin Tarantino movie.

‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a bomb,’ they said.

‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since the first film was such a success and
    Joaquin won an Oscar.

‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next and
final film. Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she
    wants to audition.

‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a script is presented, it is a bucket
list moment for her to be involved.’

Lady Gaga channels Harley Quinn at The Joker: Folie à Deux LA premiere

One month before the sequel’s release date, Joaquin praised
Lady Gaga for her ‘impressive’ preparation for
    the feature film.

During a Venice Film Festival press conference in which he discussed shedding
pounds for Joker, he added: ‘Stefani also lost a lot of weight.

‘I remember when I first met you in rehearsals and then you went away for like a month

  27. SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.

dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from the
world’s second-largest economy and the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes due
later in the day to gauge its policy path.

The dollar held steady, giving some relief to
the yuan after a sharp rally to a seven-week high last
    week.

Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips lower than the previous late session close at 7.066.
Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint
rate, around which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band,
at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.

    China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the
first time since Sept. 13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning
streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.

The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due to broad dollar strength,
but the currency has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.

China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise from
expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora,
adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk
reward is unattractive. «Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,» the strategists said.

Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus
measures that could help further lift China asset
sentiment. Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if local equities remain supported, similar to what happened in Nov.

2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.
The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar,
up about 0.09% in Asian trade. The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

  28. SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed

Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected
to drive up U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the
yuan from falling too much. «We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,» Lynn
Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.

However, «we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.» The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.

Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year
low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest
weekly losing streak since 2018. The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and «the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building» in the
yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.

Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with
manufacturing activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China’s «economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,»
said John Browning, managing director of BANDS Financial.

He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as «Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.» Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree
on major economic goals for next year.

But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators
globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions, likely will not be officially announced until an annual
parliament meeting in March. During Trump’s first term as president,
the yuan weakened about 5% against the dollar after the initial round of
    U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another
1.5% a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed
China’s 10-year treasury yields below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield
disadvantage against the U.S., and exerting downward
pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore yuan to move within a band
between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further
to 7.50 «if tariffs come in earlier or more aggressive than our forecasts.»
